Former premier Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday hailed the election-winning Move Forward Party as disruptors who had mastered social media, and said the ageing army generals central to years of turmoil should retire with dignity. The self-exiled tycoon also waded into the growing debate over the sensitive lese-majeste law, which Move Forward wants to amend, saying Pheu Thai would not back any action that could harm the monarchy. Move Forward, he said in a Clubhouse chat on Tuesday, proved that social media and user-generated content (UGC) can triumph over big-spending campaigns and vote-buying. Before Sunday’s vote, the populist political juggernaut founded…
The publication, printing, broadcast and distribution of any material that misleads the people, especially Muslims, will not be allowed in Johor, says Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar. “This is in line with the position of Islam in the state constitution. “In Johor, the fatwa published on June 4, 2009 clearly states that the use of the word ‘Allah’ by non-Muslims is not permitted, not allowed and its use is prohibited. “The state also has the Control and Restriction of the Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment 1991, which prohibits the use of words that are exclusive to Muslims and cannot…
The early closure of a bail counter at a Kuala Lumpur courthouse has been criticised by former deputy law minister Hanipa Maidin, who said such actions were illegal. Hanipa also said it was “totally unacceptable” for the counter to close earlier. “In my view, it is absolutely illegal to deny the six men from posting a bail when the court has already granted bail to them,” he said in a statement. Yesterday, it was reported that six men would be spending the long weekend in prison, as the counter that processes bail had closed earlier than usual. They were among…

Direct services from Malaysia have returned to Gold Coast Airport, with AirAsia X resuming a three times weekly route from Kuala Lumpur for the first time in three years. The connection will bring 58,000 additional seats into the region each year. The return of the route is a collaborative effort between Queensland Airports Limited, the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, the Gold Coast City Council and Destination Gold Coast through the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund. “Since the first AirAsia X flight took off from Kuala Lumpur to the Gold Coast in 2007 more than two million travellers have flown…
The unity government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains firm in terms of governance to restore the dignity and integrity of the country by rejecting any misdeeds, corruption and misappropriation. The prime minister emphasised this so that the fate of Malaysians will be secured and their dignity redeemed. “Any country that wants to progress must be based on trust, values, kindness and mercy. “This is cultivated but what is integral in all of this that becomes the axis is the sanctity of our soul, desire to bring changes by establishing principles of discipline and grace which we…

KUALA LUMPUR – The government will increase the tax rates for the country’s top 20 per cent income earners (T20) community by 0.5 per cent to 2 per cent, in the recently tabled 2023 Budget. The latest measure will affect “rich” Malaysians earning RM100,000 to RM1 million (S$30,000 to S$300,500) a year. When a country’s finances are in bad shape, adjusting individual and corporate income tax rates seems like a necessary measure for the government. As expected, other than a higher income tax, the T20 will also be excluded from the government’s electricity and petrol subsidies, meaning not everyone will…
KUALA LUMPUR, Investors are expected to become more cautious next week as bets about Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) will be in focus ahead of the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC) second meeting for the year scheduled on March 8 and 9. In a research note today, Kenanga Research said the central bank is expected to maintain the status quo. “If the US Federal Reserve (Fed) chairman Jerome Powell delivers a hawkish message and US job data continue to be resilient, it may lead to another round of repricing in its policy path, further pressuring risk assets,” it…

Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khaled said the state government was paying serious attention to the event.
